Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

ITS Infrastructure & Operations (I&O) manages the ITS data centers and provides around-the-clock support for ITS business computing activities. I&O also supports and maintains the infrastructure for network, data communications transport services, and campus desktop computers, and maintains the infrastructure for the operating systems for non-research ITS servers and for disaster recovery and business continuity activities for ITS. I&O also manages the enterprise-wide IT Service Management platform ServiceNow.

Position Summary

This position is a 100% remote work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. The Senior Global Systems Administrator is the primary admin for designing and maintaining the local infrastructure that supports Microsoft cloud-based platforms for UNC Chapel Hill including Microsoft EntraID, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft Azure. These Platforms are integral to the day-to-day business of UNC Chapel Hill and are critical for the entire University population. In addition to being a Global Admin for these Microsoft Cloud Platforms, this position serves as a Domain Administrator for UNC Chapel Hill’s central Active Directory which is responsible for the configuration and security of over 30,000 Windows based computers and servers at the University. The Senior Global Systems Administrator acts as a backup administrator for M365 email security and identity tools, acts as a backup administrator for the UNC Listserv Service, and also maintains MS SQL instances supporting the Infrastructure and Operations division of the Central IT department for UNC Chapel Hill. This position works directly with Central Campus IT, Distributed IT units, and UNC Security. As this is a senior position, a qualified candidate must have experience as global admin for Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Active Directory domain administration, Microsoft Group policy, Microsoft Server, and Exchange. Experience with Email Security, Lyris Listserv, and MS SQL is preferred.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master’s and 1-2 years’ experience; or Bachelors and 2-4 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The following experience is required:

Understand complex IT environments and dependencies

Operating system management, networking knowledge, hardware patching, software patching, and infrastructure design

Prior experience with Microsoft 365 Global Administration, MS EntraID Global Administration, Exchange Administration, and Active Directory Domain administration

Prior experience with Windows Server OS and Group Policy

Ability to collaborate effectively with a motivated team

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Prior Experience with Public, Private and Hybrid Cloud services

Microsoft Azure

Prior Experience administrating Electronic Mail Identity and Security
